The world has changed significantly since we surveyed people in February and March 2020. This data reflects people’s lives at that time but may not be reflective of their current living situations.

The Expat Explorer survey, now in its thirteenth year, is the longest running independent global survey of expats. Commissioned by HSBC Expat and conducted by a third party research company YouGov, 19,033 expats based in over 40 countries and regions were questioned in February and March 2020.

How do you define an expat?

For the survey, we have defined an expatriate as someone over the age of 18 years old who is currently living away from their home country (country of origin).

Are the respondents HSBC customers?

As a specialist provider of offshore savings and wealth management for expatriates, of course we invited our customers to take part. But we also wanted a truly international snapshot of expat life. We contacted online communities and used expat social media sites to ensure as many different international expat groups were included.

Why doesn't Expat Explorer reflect the latest events in the news?

The 2020 study was conducted between 14 February and 22 March 2020, when COVID-19 was emerging as a global threat but before it had reached its highest peak. The data reflects people’s lives at that time but may not be reflective of their current living situations.

Why is the location I am interested in not featured in the Expat Explorer results?

In order for the results and league tables to be statistically significant, we need a minimum sample size of 100 expat respondents from each location. Although we had respondents from over 100 locations this year, 40 met the minimum number of responses required. Keep an eye out for next year's survey and help spread the word so we can include as many locations as possible!
